The Best Hair Removal Method for Your Skin and Hair
Hair removal is practiced by both men and women regardless of age, nationality and race. This
means that prospective hair removal clients may be of different hair and skin types and colors. What works
wonderfully for a brunette with pale skin might not work the same on a blonde with a tan. That is why it is
important to look into the different methods of hair removal available and be familiar with a little background on
which works better for which hair and skin type.
Hair Type
-If you are a redhead, blonde, or have graying or white hair, you may not have a very effective
result after laser therapy. Laser hair removal is most sensitive to pigment, so it specifically targets the darker
pigment, giving people with dark hair a bigger chance of success. Also, gray hairs are rather coarse. Depilatory
creams may be more effective in this case. Shaving and waxing are also options that will work in any case.
-If your hair comes in very fine strands, there aren’t too many options open for you. You might
find it difficult to shave, wax, or use a rotary epilator on them. Also, laser does not work too well on it because
of the lack of melanin. Electrolysis will take longer to find your hair follicle, and might cause skin damage
because of the shallow roots. Using a depilatory cream may remove most of the hair.
-If you have
dark hair, you have the biggest chance of getting a successful result after laser therapy. The hair contains a
lot of pigment and melanin and is therefore easier located by the hand-held device. Electrolysis is also
effective on this type, and so is epilation or any method that removes the hair from its root. Dark hair is
very visible during regrowth so temporary methods such as shaving, tweezing and waxing aren’t as highly
recommended. Some people also prefer to bleach the hair to make it blend with skin color, but this only works
in some cases, because bleach is only limited to a few choices of colors.
Skin Type
-Dark skin- People with dark skin and curly hair usually suffer problems after shaving, such as
ingrown hair, which appears in the form of little bumps. Laser therapy may also cause a change in pigmentation. A
patch test before any procedure is recommended to check the skin’s reaction.
-Tanned skin- A person who is not naturally dark may have tanned skin for a number of reasons.
He might have a career, sport or hobby that keeps him outdoors for most of the day, or he may be fond of the beach
or tanning salons. Whichever the case, sun exposure not long before or after electrolysis or laser therapy is
discouraged. It usually results in patchy skin color changes that do not subside for months. A few weeks of
avoidance of sun exposure is recommended right before and after treatment.
-Allergic skin- Electrolysis is generally safe except for people who are allergic to certain
metals found in the probe. Also, some hair removal products like depilatories or waxes may contain chemicals that
the person’s skin is sensitive to. This is why a patch test must be done to test the skin’s reaction before going
through with any of these methods.
-Scar-prone skin or keloid-formers- Shaving and electrolysis are discouraged in these cases.
-Medicated skin- Waxing is harmful for people who are maintaining medications like Trentinoin,
Alpha-hydroxyacid, or Accutane. These are exfoliating drugs and waxing exfoliated skin might remove skin layers
together with the hair.
While vanity may be a valid reason for hair removal, safety should be the primary consideration. Always consult
with a physician to ensure that the method you are attempting is advisable.
