Permanent Hair Removal Options
There are many hair removal options, but most of them are temporary. Some of them, like shaving, are best done
on a daily basis. Some others, such as tweezing, waxing, or depilatory creams, take as long as a number of days to
many weeks before hair grows back in those areas again.
But not all people are high-maintenance. Some may find that these temporary methods of hair removal are
bothersome. Also, not everybody wants it done on a regular basis because of the time factor or plain laziness. Some
have low tolerance to pain and cannot stand tweezing or waxing. Others have sensitive skin that gets allergic or
irritated when hair removal creams or chemicals are applied. In these cases, one might want to choose among
permanent hair removal options.
One permanent method of hair removal is electrolysis. Electrolysis makes use of electricity at a low level to
disable hair follicles or make sure they are no longer active. Not all hair can be removed in one session. It
usually takes several sessions before it becomes permanent. It may even take years. However, if you are one of
those people who cannot withstand pain, electrolysis may not be such a good idea.
If you decide to try electrolysis, make sure that the person performing the procedure is trained or certified
for it. There have been many instances where electrolysis was performed erroneously and it resulted in permanent
skin scarring. For health and hygiene purposes, see to it that the needle used is different for each session.
Another method of permanent hair removal is laser therapy. In this procedure, there is a doctor or certified
nurse who presses a laser device on your skin by hand. There is usually also a gel or some sort of cooling
mechanism to protect the skin being treated.
When the laser device is activated, it produces a laser light that goes through the surface of the skin to the
hair follicles, which is where the growth of hair begins. The heat produced by the laser is so intense that it
destroys the hair follicle, making it poorly equipped to maintain hair growth in that area. During this process,
there is a tingling sensation. For those uncomfortable with the sensation, they may request a light skin
anesthetic. It is also important to wear goggles or a protective eye shield during this process, because laser
light can damage eyesight. There may be a faint odor of singed hair during the process.
The whole procedure of removal of hair by laser may take a few minutes to many hours depending on the area of
the body and the amount of hair on that area. Small parts of the face don’t take too much time. The back or chest
may take up several hours. Also, there is no guarantee that hair will be permanently removed after one session. In
fact, it usually takes several sessions.
If you are considering any of these hair removal options, you must be prepared to run both the risks and the
cost involved. It may be a good idea to consult a physician and receive some valuable advice regarding the
procedures.
