The Risks of Facial Hair Removal By Laser
Facial hair removal through more permanent methods is usually practiced by women. While men may remove their
facial hair for reasons of their profession or simply vanity, they usually opt for temporary methods such as
shaving. In some cultures, an excess of facial hair for men is even encouraged. But in the case of the gentler sex,
having visible facial hair, particularly on the upper lip or chin, is frowned upon. It is seen as masculine and
unattractive and usually makes the woman in question a laughingstock. Thus, they usually opt for some way of hair
removal.
Women, too, may have their hair removed through temporary methods like shaving, tweezing or waxing. Trouble is,
shaving makes the hair grow back thicker and stubble appears on the face. The other two methods happen to be very
painful.
Therefore, the women who are able to afford it opt for laser facial hair removal. This procedure is quicker and
more comfortable than waxing or electrolysis. Also, it doesn’t take up much time- just a few minutes per session.
Naturally, the client needs to return for a number of sessions before the hair is permanently removed.
However, if there are pros to laser facial hair removal, there are cons as well. This procedure comes with its
share of risks.
Risks of Laser Facial Hair Removal
1. The success of laser hair removal is not always assured. It is usually most applicable to people with brown
or black hair and fair complexion. There is also a big margin of success of people with darker skin, but their hair
must be dark as well. There is a great risk of failure if the patient is fair-skinned with white, light brown,
blonde, or light red hair.
2. Some doctors claiming to practice laser facial hair removal are not board-certified. This is especially true
in some spas and salons, or even in clinic where it is not the physician who performs the procedure, but his
assistant or some other member of the staff. It is very dangerous to put your health in the hands of somebody who
is not licensed. To reduce this risk, make sure the doctor is one you know or look for some proof that he is
properly trained and certified in dermatology or a related field. If the physician insists that his nurse or
assistant does the procedure, also insist that he has to be there to supervise. There may be a danger of bleeding
or infection if the person doing the procedure is not qualified. Of course, these are rare cases but you would not
want to take that chance.
3. Even if you go to a certified doctor, there is the risk of blistering, scarring, changes in the texture of
your skin, scabbing, or crusting. Fortunately, the last two are temporary. The rest are rare, but there is some
possibility.
4. Some clients who undergo this procedure experience changing of their skin color after treatment. There is
hyperpigmentation, which means that the skin darkens. There are rare cases where it occurs permanently, but it is
usually temporary. There is also hypopigmentation or skin lightening, which most commonly occurs in people with
dark skin.
5. Hair changes are also a possibility. Hair in the surrounding areas may also be affected and become lighter
and finer. Also, new hair growth may sprout in adjacent areas.
Before you opt for laser facial hair removal, make sure that you make a background check and all the necessary
inquiries to minimize the chance of these risks.
